Barbara Marr's Holiday Movie Guide

Join Karen Cantwell's lovable, wacky, mystery-solving character, Barbara Marr, as she runs down some of her favorite seasonal flicks.

When it comes to holiday movies, film buff, Barbara Marr has certainly seen them all. And generally, she has enjoyed most of them. While she applauds the more celebrated classics like It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, and Home Alone, once the Thanksgiving turkey leftovers are packed away, she likes to kick back and get in the Christmas mood with some less famous flicks that represent the season.

Die Hard (Barbara's favorite Christmas movie)
What's better than bad guys, guns, Christmas trees, and a really tough off-duty cop with attitude portrayed by a young Bruce Willis? Nothing.

Barb's favorite quote: " Nine million terrorists in the world and I gotta kill one with feet smaller than my sister." — John McLane

The Nightmare Before Christmas
When Jack Skellington, the king of Halloweentown decides to branch out and take a stab at Christmas, things don't go quite as well as he expected. His heart is in the right place though, and that's what makes this movie so much fun.

Barb's favorite quote: "Just because I cannot see it, doesn't mean I can't believe it!" — Jack Skellington

Little Women
Barb doesn't like to play favorites, especially when classic movies are involved, but she has to admit that the 1994 version of this movie starring Susan Sarandon and Wynona Ryder gets her more in the Christmas spirit than the 1933 Katharine Hepburn flick. She's quick to admit that a twenty-year-old Christian Bale playing the romantic role of Laurie doesn't hurt the scenery any.

Barb's favorite quote: "You know, when first I saw you I thought "ah, she is a writer."  —Friedrich

Bridget Jones' Diary
One good reason to watch this movie: the chance to see Colin Firth wearing a reindeer sweater. Another good reason: the chance to see Colin Firth, period.

Barb's favorite quote: "My mum, a strange creature from the time when pickles on toothpicks were still the height of sophistication." — Bridget Jones

The Bishop's Wife (Cary Grant)
Cary Grant plays an angel named Dudley. For that reason alone, you need to watch this amazingly sweet and funny movie. As Barb says, "Cary Grant makes any movie a great movie."

Barb's favorite quote: "Sometimes angels rush in where fools fear to tread." — Dudley

Love Actually
Everyone needs a little love during the Christmas season, not to mention this dream cast: Colin Firth (again!), Liam Neeson, Keira Knightly, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Laura Linney, and Alan Rickman.

Barb's favorite quote: "Beautiful Aurelia, I've come here with a view of asking you to marriage me. I know I seems an insane person — because I hardly knows you — but sometimes things are so transparency, they don't need evidential proof. And I will inhabit here, or you can inhabit with me in England." – Jamie (played loveably by Colin Firth . . .)
